The Art of Wedding Flatlays: What to Gather for Picture-Perfect Details

We know how much thought goes into choosing every little detail for your wedding day, and as your wedding photographers, we’re here to ensure your wedding details are captured with the care they deserve. To help you stay organized, we’ve crafted a wedding details checklist to ensure you have everything gathered for those picture-perfect images with details that tell the story.

What Are Wedding Details?

Wedding details are the carefully chosen elements that help tell the story of your day. They include everything from your invitation suite and rings to your bouquet, veil, shoes, and special jewelry. They’re the little things that matter—a cherished heirloom, handwritten vows, or a meaningful gift exchanged before ‘I do.’ Each detail adds depth and character to your wedding, and we capture them to make sure every part of your celebration is remembered.

Why Are Wedding Details Important?

With wedding planning, you spend a lot of time choosing your wedding rings, invitations, flowers and accessories. Capturing these small but important details will remind you both of all the little things that went into making your wedding day special.

When capturing your wedding details, we arrange two or three flat lays depending on the kind of items you prepare. We'll find a spot to lay out your details and make them look beautiful. We want to make sure that we capture all the details that tell your love story!

In case you need some inspiration for which wedding details to gather and set aside, we’re sharing a few suggestions for you to keep in mind. If any of these items don’t resonate with your day or your love story, don’t feel pressured to follow this list — use it as a guide to spark inspiration for details that are truly meaningful to you.

Wedding Details Checklist for Your Flatlays

Invitation Suite

Your invitation suite includes all the stationery used for your wedding invitations. We recommend including a few copies of your paper stationery so we can feature them both front and back, and from different angles.

  • Wedding invitations

  • RSVP cards

  • Save the dates

  • Envelopes

  • Stamps and seals

  • Ribbons to match your wedding colors

  • Loose florals (ask your florist for a handful) or your bouquet/boutonniere

Rings and shiny things

Since we’re capturing your detail photos first thing once we arrive on your wedding day, this is the perfect chance to give us a moment with all your accessories while you’re still getting ready. We love to see all of your rings, plus any other jewelry, pocket squares, heirloom charms, or sentimental tokens.

  • Engagement rings

  • Wedding bands

  • Ring box or ring dish (let us know if you want us to bring one for you)

  • Perfume/cologne

  • Hairpieces

  • Jewelry (earrings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets)

  • Cufflinks, watches, tie pins

  • Ties, suspenders

  • Handkerchiefs/pocket squares

  • Shoes/heels

  • Family heirlooms

  • Bouquet/boutonniere

Sentimental pages

Of course, don’t forget the pieces you’ll use throughout the rest of your day.

  • Vow books

  • Any details that may be used in the ceremony (e.g. fans, veil and cord, candle, coin pouch)

  • Any custom signage (e.g. table numbers, drink menus, pet portrait napkins)

The rest of your love story

Last but certainly not least — let’s tell the part of the love story that brought you to this day. We love when our couples include mementos from their first dates, memorable trips, and anything else that brings all the warm and fuzzy feelings, for example:

  • Handwritten letters

  • Polaroids

  • Seashells

  • Movie stubs

  • Ring pops

  • Stuffed animals

Things to remember

A few planning tips as you’re thinking about what your getting-ready time will look like:

  • Gather these detail items ahead of time and place them in a box. On the wedding day, designate a member of the wedding party to be in charge of keeping track of the detail box and getting it to your photographer and videographer.

  • Make sure to have enough time built into your wedding day schedule for your photographer and videographer to organize the detail shots while you and your partner are getting ready.

Every Wedding Details Checklist Is Different for Each Couple

Some of the items from this wedding details checklist will apply to you and some may not. For example, your wedding photographer may carry ring boxes or ribbons with them. Or you might not have an invitation suite because you’re eloping. But we've made sure to cover all the different kinds of wedding details that you may like to include in your wedding detail shots.

If you want to plan your wedding details ahead of time, or if there's a particular wedding detail you might want your wedding photographer to bring, let them know! We love wedding details over at The Pasmans Photo + Film, and we make sure to help you as much as we can to make prep for your wedding day photos as smooth as possible.
