Aira + Jeffrey's Traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony
Part of Aira and Jeffrey's multicultural wedding included a traditional Chinese tea ceremony before their wedding ceremony. The Chinese tea ceremony is a tradition where spouses-to-be serve tea to their families. After serving the tea they receive well wishes for their union and gifts too. Usually, the couple is given lai see, which are red envelopes containing money or jewelry. These envelopes symbolize luck and good fortune. Aira and Jeffrey did the tea ceremony at Aira's parent's home first then at Jeffrey's parent's home, both with important elders from each side of their family.
How Aira and Jeffrey Incorporated Filipino Wedding Traditions
Another part of Aira and Jeffrey's multicultural wedding featured Filipino wedding traditions including the Filipino coin exchange, veil and cord during the ceremony. During the coin ceremony, 13 coins (which are called arras) are trickled into the hands of the couple, symbolizing their promise to each other, for better and for worse and for richer and for poorer. After exchanging their vows, Aira and Jeffrey sat side by side for their veil and cord ceremony. A large veil was placed on Aira's head and Jeffrey's shoulders and a cord was wrapped around them both, symbolizing their unity.
A Chinese and Filipino Multicultural Wedding Ceremony and Reception
Not only did Aira and Jeffrey incorporate their cultures into their wedding ceremony but they also honored each other's heritage during their reception by wearing each other's cultural dresses! Aira wore a red cheongsam gown (also known as the qipao or mandarin gown) to honor Jeffrey's Chinese heritage while Jeffrey wore a barong tagalog to honor Aira's heritage!
